From the heart of the Servant Pastor:
 Time, Talent and Treasure or
Work, Wisdom and Wealth
By Father Bill Eberle

Our diocesan stewardship officer suggested at a Planned Giving seminar that we might take a fresh look at the management of God's blessings entrusted to us. For many years we have focused on "time, talent and treasure". She suggested we refocus on "work, wisdom and wealth". I don't know who she "borrowed" this from or from whom they "borrowed" it.

Let me expand this a little. When we give "work" to the church it involves what we hope to accomplish with our effort expended over time. I hope this reminds us to give our best energy not just "put in time".

"Wisdom" what I know how to do, the network of experiences, learning and relationship is broader for some people than their "talent". "Talent" in the Biblical "parable of the talents" is a weight of precious metal. What precious understandings and abilities do you have? Everybody is "gifted" in what they know and God's faith community needs and expects these gifts to be put into play as we pursue the course God has set before us.

"Wealth" is a word we might use more frequently than "treasure". Many people are tempted to sit on treasure, to protect it etc. Wealth generally means the resources to accomplish something, having more than enough so you can risk expending some of it.

I believe that "work, wisdom and wealth" can refocus us to trust more (become more dependent on God) to be more effective model (or "witness" if we are still caught up on the "w's")

God's love for us is far beyond our understanding. He wants us to grow to be like Him through what we do with what He gives us.
